A lot identifier and clear date marking are required by India's FSSAI Labelling & Display Regulations, the EU's Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, and the US FDA / FSMA traceability rules (including the FSMA 204 Food Traceability Rule for listed foods). The one field that genuinely varies by country is MRP: printing it is mandatory under India's Legal Metrology rules, while other markets use optional price marking. "Don't I Need a New Printer?" — No. Here's Why

What to Encode in the QR (GTIN + Batch + Dates via GS1 Digital Link)
A well-built food QR should carry the same identifiers your regulator and your recall process rely on: the GTIN (product barcode number), the batch/lot, the MFG and expiry dates. A Batch Number Format That Actually Helps You
A good batch number is human-readable, sortable, and tells you where and when a run was made without opening a spreadsheet. A pattern like PLANT-YYMMDD-LINE-SEQ — for example DEL-260710-A-04 — encodes plant, date, line and sequence in one string.

- Include characters that smudge or confuse (O vs 0)

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Printing the QR too small or with no quiet zone. Aim for at least 15–20 mm square with clear white space around it. Ink bleed on glossy film and curved bottles is the top reason a QR fails to scan — always test on the real substrate.
- One static QR for the whole product. If every pack shares an identical code, it cannot tell you the batch and cannot detect clones. Print a unique QR per pack so it is meaningful.
- Ambiguous dates. "07/06/27" reads as three different dates around the world. Label them (MFG / EXP) and prefer an unambiguous form such as "Best before Jun 2027"; inside GS1 data, dates are strictly YYMMDD.
- Dropping the printed batch code. The QR does not replace the human-readable lot number and dates — regulators still require them on the pack. Keep both.
- MRP mismatches. Where MRP is printed by law, make sure the value on the pack matches the value in your system and invoices; a mismatch is a compliance and trust problem.

Do I need a special printer to print a QR with my batch code?

Can my old handheld inkjet print a unique QR on every pack?
Yes. Because the printer reads one record at a time from the CSV on its USB drive, each pack can get a different serialized QR. That per-unit uniqueness is what enables clone detection and true traceability — the same reason variable data printing exists.
Does this work for export packs and different date formats?
