How to Convert Between GTIN Formats: UPC-A, EAN-13 & GTIN-14 Explained

Convert between GTIN-8, GTIN-12 (UPC-A), GTIN-13 (EAN-13), and GTIN-14 formats instantly with our free converter. Learn why different formats exist, how zero-padding works, and when you need each format.

Different trading partners, marketplaces, and systems require different GTIN formats. Amazon may ask for a UPC-A (12 digits), your logistics partner needs GTIN-14 for shipping cartons, and your Indian distributor expects an EAN-13. Converting between these formats is straightforward once you understand the zero-padding rules, but getting it wrong means rejected listings or broken supply chain data. This guide explains how GTIN formats relate to each other and how to convert between them using our free tool.

Understanding GTIN Formats

All GTIN formats are part of the same numbering system. The key difference is how many leading zeros are included. At its core, every GTIN can be represented as a 14-digit number. Shorter formats simply omit the leading zeros:

The Same Product in All GTIN Formats

GTIN-14: 00012345678905
GTIN-13: 0012345678905
GTIN-12: 012345678905

Grey digits are leading zeros that are omitted in shorter formats

When Do You Need to Convert?

  • Amazon US requires UPC-A (12 digits): If you have an EAN-13 starting with 0, you can convert it to UPC-A by removing the leading zero.
  • International marketplaces need EAN-13: If you have a UPC-A, convert to EAN-13 by adding a leading zero.
  • Shipping cartons need GTIN-14: Add an indicator digit (1-8) and zero-pad to 14 digits for outer case identification.
  • Database standardization: Many systems store all GTINs as 14-digit numbers internally, zero-padding shorter formats.
  • Product feed uploads: Different platforms expect different formats. Convert to match each platform's requirements.

How GTIN Conversion Works

Expanding: UPC-A to EAN-13

To convert a 12-digit UPC-A to a 13-digit EAN-13, simply add a leading zero. The check digit remains the same because UPC-A is just EAN-13 with the leading zero omitted.

UPC-A: 012345678905 → EAN-13: 0012345678905

Compressing: EAN-13 to UPC-A

You can only convert an EAN-13 to UPC-A if the first digit is 0. Remove the leading zero to get the 12-digit UPC-A. If the EAN-13 starts with any digit other than 0, it cannot be expressed as a UPC-A.

Important

Not all EAN-13 numbers can become UPC-A. An EAN-13 like 8901234567890 (starts with 8) has no UPC-A equivalent. Only EAN-13 numbers starting with 0 can be converted to UPC-A.

GTIN-14: Adding an Indicator Digit

GTIN-14 is used to identify different packaging levels of the same product. It adds an indicator digit (1-8) at the beginning, and the check digit is recalculated for the full 14-digit number.

  • Indicator 0: Item level (same as the base GTIN)
  • Indicator 1: Innermost packaging level (e.g., a pack of 6)
  • Indicators 2-8: Higher packaging levels (cases, pallets, etc.)
  • Indicator 9: Variable measure trade item

Our converter handles the check digit recalculation automatically when converting to GTIN-14. You can also use the Check Digit Calculator to verify the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a UPC the same as an EAN?

Almost. UPC-A (12 digits) is a subset of EAN-13 (13 digits). Every UPC-A can be expressed as an EAN-13 by adding a leading zero. They use the same check digit algorithm and are scanned by the same barcode readers.

Does the check digit change when converting formats?

When converting between GTIN-8, GTIN-12, and GTIN-13 (zero-padding), the check digit stays the same. When creating a GTIN-14 with an indicator digit, the check digit must be recalculated because the digit sequence changes.

Can I convert a GTIN-8 to EAN-13?

Yes. Pad the GTIN-8 with five leading zeros to get a 13-digit EAN-13 equivalent. Our GTIN Converter handles this automatically.

Is the converter free?

Yes. Convert between all GTIN formats with no limits and no registration required.
